Help for Smart Finance

Browser Requirements: Netscape Navigator version 4.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher. (If you are using AOL's browser, please switch to one of the above if you experience any difficulty. To do this: log on to AOL. Minimize the browser. Then launch either Netscape or Internet Explorer.)

Did you purchase the product online, or was there an access certificate (serial number) packaged with your textbook?

If the product was purchased through an access certificate (serial number), you must first register the serial number before you can enter to use the product.

If the product was bought online (through the ecatalog), you must bookmark it immediately after linking to the start page and always access it through the bookmark.

Accessing the Features in Smart Finance: The updated free Flash Player and QuickTime Player are required to view the animations and videos, and they are easily accessible for your use.

To register an access certificate (serial number):

  • Have your access serial number handy. (You may not share a serial number with anyone else. The serial number provides access for one person for a subscription period. Then you must buy a new one. This can be purchased through the South-Western Catalog.)
  • Click on the Register button.
  • Then click the link at the bottom of the page and follow the prompts.
  • IMPORTANT: When you click on the link at the bottom of the page, you will be asked first to enter your serial number and a new or existing username. It is extremely important to enter your serial number exactly as it appears on the card. Make sure you type the dashes, pay attention to capitalization, and be certain to distinguish letters from numbers. An "O" with a slash through it is a "zero." The letters "C," "G," and "Q" also are frequently mis-keyed. If you do not enter your serial number exactly as it appears on the card, you will not be able to register properly.

To enter when you have registered:

  • Have your username and password that you created during registration handy. (A copy of this is automatically emailed to you when registration is completed.)
  • Click on the Enter button.
  • Then click on the Enter Here link under "I already registered Smart Finance."
  • Enter the username and password you created when you registered.

To access the updated free Flash Player and QuickTime Player needed to view the Smart Finance features:

  • To view the Smart Concepts and Smart Solutions Flash animations, you will need the updated free Flash player. Most browsers automatically come with the free Flash Player integrated as a plug-in. However, if you need the free Flash Player, you may download it from the Flash download Web site by clicking on the Get Flash Player logo.

  • To view the Smart Ideas Video, Smart Practices Video, and Smart Ethics Video, the updated free QuickTime player is required. It is available to install via your Smart Finance CD (double-click on QuickTimeInstaller.exe and follow the instructions). Alternatively, you may download the free player from the QuickTime download Web site by clicking on the Get QuickTime logo. For easier download, we offer Standard Video Quality and High-Speed Video Quality for the video clips. Standard Video Quality requires at least a 56K Modem Internet Connection. High-Speed Video Quality requires at least an ISDN Internet Connection. Please be patient, the video clips may take a moment to download.
